Halfway down the gravel road stands a door that’s halfway open Through the door there stands a glass that’s always halfway full Purple mountain tragedies and red light shining through the window Golden carpet leads the way to somewhere I don’t know CHORUS Bombs bursting in my hand Crumbling maps and telephones My dreams are shattered ‘cross the land Dying cries of magazines and dollar bills you never borrowed Tabloid articles unwritten, papered on the wall Where were you when we were flying underneath the unwashed masses? Trudging through the sea of children marching through the hall? CHORUS Bloody statues, falling down ‘Neath the hollow oak And their staring eyes, underground Dance a waltz with hope Run away Run away CHORUS (x2)

CHORUS I'm writing a three-chord song Simple and not too long I'm writing a three-chord song Today I'm writing a three-chord song Anyone can pluck along I'm writing a three-chord song 'Cause that's all I can play G G G G G, C C C C C G G G G G G D G G G G G, C C C C C G G G G D D G I play the violin so sweet, any tune I hear But I can't sing with that thing pressed against my ear So I got a guitar, but I can hardly do songs That on the fiddle wouldn't faze me a little but my fingers stick like glue But... CHORUS I could put in a bridge with no minors or ups and downs But what good is a bridge if it just goes round and round? I could put in another verse, but I'm already sick of the tune And the longer this is, the worse, so I'd better stop it soon But... CHORUS

Sometimes I think, to me it seems We're all together sharing a dream Someday we'll wake up sweating and scream And find we're alone together What do we think? How do we feel? Where are we going to get our next meal? And why do we keep reinventing the wheel If we're alone together? CHORUS Sit, watch the bluebirds fly Wait, watch the clouds roll by Imagine, in your mind's eye That we're alone together Jump on a horse, strap on a sword Feel the earth shake, hear the giant's roar How long does it take before you get bored Of galloping round by a tether? Sometimes I wonder what living is worth Sometimes I think about life after birth Are there really people far away from this earth Or are we alone together? CHORUS

Out in the wilds of great midwestern state Lives the biggest fungus from which man ever ate Either the world's most humongous living thing Or lots of cloned fungus with same genetic string CHORUS Live in the dark and eat compost That's what it takes to be the most Live in the dark and you'll thrive That's what it takes to survive Won't have to worry 'bout your weight You will cover up a whole state You'll be what some people eat Though you'll be under their feet CHORUS You will never have to exercise Can't see a mirror without eyes People to your side will fly For you will be a fungi CHORUS

I wish all the liquor was bottled up well And cast to the bottomless dungeons of Hell It ruins our young men and makes of them slaves Our fathers fall by it and fill drunkards' graves CHORUS Great spirit that guided our ancestors, come And lead us, their children, to honor and fame The wife needs protection, the orphan a home While the demon of drink sways the sceptre of shame While the demon of drink sways the sceptre of shame The fair one, heartbroken, is wasting away The young wife is drooping in early decay While widows and orphans as monuments stand To tell of its horrors all over the land CHORUS O hope of the nation, ye sons of the brave Have virtue and manhood forsaken your breast? Shall we brook a tyrant and sceptre a knave While freedom was born by the blood of the best? CHORUS

about

The Crisis Center is a shock folk duo named after our old apartment in college. We did a few coffeehouse gigs at Brandeis and one at Tufts.

We recorded this album in the space of about 3 hours, practically unrehearsed, in Susan's apartment. You've been warned. Also, we swear, and some of the songs are about sex, so, um, parental advisory. :)

The Crisis Center is Nat Budin (guitar) and Susan Weiner (fiddle). They both sing, even though they probably shouldn't.
